Courtesy Visit to MP of Asutifi North and Chief of Ntrotroso

The next day, 26th August 2014, started with a visit to the MP of Asutifi North district.
He expressed his readiness to support the group in the goals they were looking forward to achieve. He also have plans taking us to the Parliament house so we would have see for ourselves, what happens in there.
The crew continued on to the chief of Ntrotroso’s Palace.
On arrival, the crew had to wait outside for sometime as the chief was addressing his people. When they finally had the chance to enter, they had to first greet the chief, followed by the other 15 or so elders after which they were shown their seats. The chief gave a welcome address and demanded to know their mission. The coordinator of GILMNET club stood to formally introduce the group, thus making the chief know of the reason for their visit. He stated that: ‘We are an NGO based in Kenyasi. Our main interest is to help reduce in young adults (especially teenage girls) the increasing rate of early sex thus, teenage pregnancy. However, during the talk, it began to rain and the crew had the opportunity to see the treatment the Ntrotroso people be gave their chief. It was actually interesting to see how the elders quickly stood up and covered the chief with their clothes so he could get up. The crew had to wait until it stopped raining before the chief came out again to address them and this took over thirty minutes after which, hardworking as they are, helped in cleaning up.

Once seated, the chief addressed his visitors once again, answering their questions with much delight and requesting to know if there were any other questions for him.
He stated that the name of the town, Ntrotroso, was named after a river by their ancestors, which provided them with all their needs when they were looking for a land to settle down.  And so, that was the only way they could show their gratitude unto the river.

After a few more inquiries on the mission of the club, the chief was satisfied and promised his best in supporting the crew in their beneficial project.

Educational Tour Begins

25th August 2014, the group is out on another field trip, this one, as a workshop. After visiting many other places, one of the members is added up to the crew, now speaking. Around 10:30a.m the secretary of the group, Navele Martha, is picked up from the station by the GILMNET crew, made up of seven very beautiful and capable young girls, along with their coordinator Belinda Afreh of GADeF.
First of all, they head to the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) where they meet the administrator in the person of Mrs Irene Appiah-Fei.
She was kind enough to answer the numerous questions the group asked her such as how to get admission to the school, the various opportunities a girl has when educated, the name of her alma mater ( Efia Kobi SHS) and to top it all up, she gave motherly or sisterly advice to the girls, telling them to take their education seriously, so that one day, they might become responsible women in the society. She also made it known that they would be very welcome into the school if they managed to pass their exams well (A1-C6). The girls were indeed grateful and after a vote of thanks, they had some pictures taken to serve as a souvenir.
From the administration, the crew were given permission to tour around the university.
The first place of interest was the auditorium of the school which was nicely decorated, including the ceiling which had ribbons attached to light bulbs.
Pictures were taken in front of the auditorium, and then they went on to the hostels. Most of the place, as remarked, was beautifully tiled and although the students were on vacation, the crew had the chance to take a quick glance at the outward view of the rooms. Again, some pictures were taken and they then proceeded to visit Pastor Clement Achim Gyimah, who is a representative of the ROJALNU(UNAIDS hosted) for West Africa, happily married with two lovely children. The crew had the chance to ask questions like, what other work he does apart from his pastoral work, why he was interested in community development and if he would be willing to help out the GILMNET club in their developments plans for the community. He answered the questions with much delight. He said he liked to help people and that is why aside his pastoral work, he chose to still help poor and needy children.

Coincidentally, the crew happened to troop in the next day after his daughter’s birthday (Josephine) so they honoured her with a birthday song and a small gift, of which she was very happy. The Pastor expressed his willingness to help in whatever the crew wanted to carry out, provided it would benefit the needy of society and so after another round of pictures, they head out to visit Action aid.
Action aid is a non-profit organization which seeks to help young people, especially girls, so they have the chance to vie for better lives, free of poverty. Handouts on the recent girls’ camp they organized for the community girls were provided the crew.
The visit to Action aid marked the end of the day as the crew returned home tired but happy about the events of the day.
